After Kanye’s Chief Keef Cosign, Major Labels Flock to Chicago Rap…

Chief Keef had been bubbling for months before Kanye West announced that he would be remixing the rapper’s popular track “I Don’t Like.” Ignored by much of the hip-hop press, it was the attention of numerous artists on Twitter—from Wiz Khalifa to Young Jeezy, Fat Trel to Pusha T—that initially spread Keef’s name beyond his original fanbase of high school kids in Chicago. When Kanye called, Keef had already announced a number of high-profile side projects: A Mike Epps-hosted tape produced by Lex Luger, a joint tape with King Louie and loose tracks with Jeezy, Yo Gotti and Fat Trel. Now, it’s tough to imagine which of them he’ll still have time for.

‘”[Keef] is already one of the most popular artists I cover next to Kanye, based on interest and traffic on the site,” says Andrew Barber of Chicago’s Fake Shore Drive. “Some people were ignoring him, but after the Kanye thing came out, everybody wanted a piece of him. People that wouldn’t have touched him two weeks ago want as much of him as possible.” Keef, producer DJ Kenn, SD and Fredo Santana, members of his Glory Boy Entertainment crew, flew to New York this week to chat with labels and meet with press. Keef tweeted that he was considering signing with Cash Money, Sony or Young Jeezy’s CTE. (Read More at The Fader…)

20 Smokin’ Songs About Weed…

It’s hard to imagine that Bob Dylan, Three 6 Mafia and Toby Keith have much in common, but all three artists understand the power of a classic stoner track. Marijuana has served as the inspiration for classic cuts in rock, hip-hop, pop, and of course, reggae, and is still influencing more than a few of our biggest artists (hello, Wiz Khalifa!) today. For 4/20, Billboard.com has put together a countdown of 20 tracks that talk about toking up, with each song including a “potency” level that measures their inebriated energy on a scale of one (mildly buzzed) to 10 (totally stoned).

The Tupac Hologram Might Tour…

The Tupac hologram that headlined Coachella last weekend may go on tour with Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, a source tells the Wall Street Journal. Dre and Snoop are evidently discussing logistics for two “likely but not guaranteed” tour options: a stadium tour involving the the virtual Tupac, Eminem, 50 Cent and Wiz Khalifa or a smaller Dre, Snoop and Tupac hologram arena tour.

Dre and Digital Domain, the visual effects company who created the virtual Tupac, talked about creating the hologram a year ago, and worked on it for four months leading up to Sunday’s show. Digital Domain’s Chief Creative Office Ed Ulbrich told the Journal that their Tupac was an entirely fabricated, 2-D image:

To create a completely synthetic human being is the most complicated thing that can be done. This is not found footage. This is not archival footage. This is an illusion.
